Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on, drug-free approach that aims to restore and maintain health through a system of diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Osteopathy addresses the whole person’s health – not just the site of injury. An injured area is connected mechanically, hormonally, and neurologically to a whole person, and can never be considered in isolation. The Osteopaths at Calibrate will consider your general health, your sleep, your diet, even your psychology, as each of these factors can have a profound effect on how an injury develops or becomes a barrier to an injury fully healing. It is often said that Osteopaths ‘promote health’ and facilitate your body’s ability to heal itself, rather than purely focus on dysfunction, injury, or disease.

After assessment and diagnosis, Osteopaths will use non-surgical techniques to treat the neuromusculoskeletal systems, this includes (but is not limited to) the muscles, joints, ligaments and nerves. The best Osteopaths will combine a mixture of hands-on treatments such as joint mobilisations and manipulations, sports massage techniques, stretching, exercises, and health and lifestyle advice. They may also use other modalities such as dry- needling, taping, electrotherapy and shockwave. At Calibrate we aim to be the best Osteopaths in Singapore and are continually researching and learning to stay at the cutting edge of human healthcare.

Osteopaths can treat recent (acute), or long-term (chronic) conditions, including a wide range of injuries and illnesses such as:

  • Nerve pain (such as sciatica)
  • Sports injuries
  • Postural strains
  • Spinal and disc issues
  • Tendinitis/tendinopathy
  • Ligament strain and tears
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle strains
  • Jaw/TMJ pain
  • Pre & post-natal issues
  • Headaches
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

In addition, Osteopaths can also help with the management of some conditions less clearly
linked to the neuromusculoskeletal system such as:

  • Irritable bowel system (IBS)
  • Migraine
  • Insomnia
  • Some symptoms associated with asthma
  • Osteoporosis and osteopenia

At Calibrate, we often work together with other healthcare professionals such as doctors and surgeons to help with the management of certain conditions including cancer-related pains, fractures, arthritis, diabetes-related symptoms, neurodegenerative diseases etc.

Osteopaths at Calibrate not only treat injuries after they happen, but also help people of all ages and activity levels to prevent injuries, improve their performance, and feel better – from professional athletes to those just starting to be active. By having a deep, expert understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics we can get to the root of whatever is holding you back – whether it is pain or some aspect of your performance.

What to Expect

Detailed case history, medical history and lifestyle

At the start of an Osteopathy appointment, a thorough assessment will be completed, which includes asking detailed information about your symptoms and how they affect your daily life or sporting activities. We will also explore some areas of your health and lifestyle that may not seem immediately related to your complaint. Many factors can influence health, healing, inflammation, and performance – and the better we can understand these factors, the better we can help.

Biomechanical assessment

Your Osteopath will perform various tests to identify the problematic area, systems, and/or movement patterns, assessing muscle strength, range of motion, nerve functions, tissue health, coordination, posture, and balance for a diagnosis. A personalised treatment plan will be developed, and further testing or referral to other health professionals may be recommended if necessary.

Personalised treatment

Your Osteopath will begin treatment with your consent and will likely provide simple personalised exercises to maximize the benefits of Osteopathy. They may also discuss nutritional, ergonomic, and training strategies or other lifestyle changes that would benefit you. Working collaboratively, your Osteopath may contact your trainer, coach, doctor, or surgeon to develop a more comprehensive treatment plan.
