What is Vestibular Physiotherapy?
Vestibular physiotherapy is a form of therapy specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness, and unsteadiness that arise from dysfunction of the inner ear (vestibular system). By using special techniques, manoeuvres and carefully prescribed exercises, our vestibular physiotherapist (Vivian Mok), can both treat the root cause of these conditions, as well as help the central nervous system adapt to improve symptoms.
Some common conditions treated by our vestibular Physiotherapist:
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
- Vestibular Neuritis
- Labyrinthitis
- Vestibular migraine
- Meniere’s disease
- Concussion
- Cervicogenic dizziness
- Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
- Age related vestibular hypofunction
- Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
- Rehabilitation after acoustic neuroma removal
The brain maintains balance by combining information from the inner ear (vestibular system), the eyes (visual system), as well as the muscles and joints (sensory and proprioceptive system). When one of these systems is disrupted, it is possible to retrain the brain to help compensate, regain balance and improve symptoms such as vertigo and dizziness.
Once a diagnosis is confidently reached, our physiotherapist will perform specific manoeuvres and techniques to help improve the function of the vestibular system. Exercises will also be prescribed to help support the work done in the clinic. Exercises such as gaze stabilization exercise, habituation exercise, and balance exercises, all work to reduce dizziness symptoms, improve balance and regain confidence in performing daily tasks and sports, and improve quality of life.
What to Expect During Vestibular Physiotherapy
At the start of the vestibular physiotherapy appointment, a comprehensive assessment will be completed, which includes acquiring detailed information about your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. Then various tests will also be carried out to isolate the problem. During the examination, we will also assess muscle strength, range of motion, coordination, posture, and balance for a holistic assessment and diagnosis.
We aim to provide the best vestibular physiotherapy in Singapore and believe that accurate diagnosis is at the heart of good treatment.
